As part of our desire to help Esperantists in Scotland to keep in touch, we’ve set up a group on Telegram.
Telegram is a messaging service not unlike WhatsApp that allows people to chat together in groups, and there are several Esperanto-related groups. It has the advantage of working on smartphones, tablets and desktop computers.
Our chat is likely to be mostly about SEA’s activities and events and connecting speakers across Scotland, but it’ll also be a good place to get help with learning the language, so everyone’s welcome to join the group!

A summary of our 115th Scottish Congress of Esperanto, held online on Saturday 30th May 2020 | Resumo de nia 115a Skota Kongreso de Esperanto, okaze rete sabaton la 30an de majo 2020
Thanks to everyone who registered for and attended our congress on Saturday this past weekend. It was a tremendous event, and historic for being our first-ever online congress!
The online format gave us a few technical problems, for which we apologise, but thanks to the Coronavirus we are all still learning about this strange new world, and look forward to smoother events in future.
One advantage of being online was the ability for Esperantists from across the world to join us – over sixty people registered from more than twenty different countries in five continents!
How appropriate it was, then, that our two speakers helped to set Scotland and Esperanto in a truly global context. We’re enormously indebted to Manuela Burghelea and Race MoChridhe for their presentations.
Manuela shared something of the research she and others are undertaking into the transnational history of Esperanto at the University of St Andrews. Then US-based academic, linguist and editor Race gave an American view of Scotland, its languages, history and culture, and talked more about his planned book about Scotland’s Esperanto movement.
Both presentations generated plenty of discussion, and although we were unfortunately unable to record them digitally we do hope this is not the end of our association’s links with and learning from Manuela’s and Race’s unique perspectives.
Our afternoon finished up with our Annual General Meeting, at which our new committee was elected, and it was followed by wonderful conversation with our guests from across the world about our country, our language(s!) and our movement.
Congress guests are welcome to keep in touch with us and subscribe to our news for further updates (see the sidebar). Given our use of online spaces to meet will continue at least for the few coming months, we’d warmly welcome back our international guests to our future events.
And of course we will welcome back everyone – hopefully in person – to Inverness for our 116th congress! We’re delighted to report that our committee agreed, following the cancellation of our Inverness congress this year, to keep those plans for 2021. Find out more about that on our congress page.
Dankon al ĉiuj, kiuj aliĝis al kaj partoprenis en nia kongreso sabaton pastintsemajnfine. Ĝi estis grandega evento, kaj historia kiel nia unua iam ajn reta kongreso!
La reta aranĝo donis al ni kelkajn teĥnikajn problemoj, por kiuj ni pardonpetas, sed dankon al la kronviruso ni ĉiuj ankoraŭ lernas pri ĉi tiu stranga nova mondo, kaj ni antaŭvidas pli glatajn eventojn estontece.

Kongresaj gastoj bonevas ankoraŭ kontaktiĝi kun ni kaj aboni al niaj novaĵoj por pluaj ĝisdatigoj (vidu la flankbaron). Ĉar nia uzado de retaj spacoj por renkontiĝi daŭros almenaŭ dum al venontaj kelkaj monatoj, ni varme rebonvenigos niajn internaciajn gastojn al niaj venontaj eventoj.

It’s just three days until the 115th Scottish Congress of Esperanto, which takes place by Zoom.
We’ve already introduced our two esteemed speakers for next week, we have registered people from across Scotland beyond, and we’re now pleased to announce our final programme for the event, which you can find on our updated congress page.
Our congress will be a short affair – from 2pm to 5pm – but packed with opportunities for lots of discussion about the Esperanto community, and our two guest speakers are sure to inform and inspire about research into our language and community and Scotland’s place within it.
We will finish the afternoon with our Annual General Meeting at 4pm, to which all our members will be welcome. Elections will be held for next year’s committee, so if you’re a member of our association please do think about if you would like to help with running our association by joining the committee.
Around an hour before the start of the congress, we will email all those who have registered with a link to enter the event. So you can still register up until that point, and can do so on the congress page.

Thanks to Ed Robertson, one of our committee, who lectured last week about “time”, in an interesting multifaceted presentation organised by our Glasgow club. We were glad to have an audience that extended beyond Glasgow – and indeed beyond Scotland. Ed spoke about various themes including our history as an association, time travel, the butterfly effect and light speed.

Our Glasgow club is pleased to announce a talk on Tuesday evening, the 12th of May (so this week!) at 7.30pm. SEA committee member and contributor to the Esperanto Duolingo course Ed Robertson will deliver a talk (in Esperanto) on the concept of Time – something perhaps we all have a bit more of these days!
The meeting will, like all our lockdown events, take place on Zoom. Everyone is welcome. If you’d like to come along, please fill out the form below and we will send you the link about an hour before the event.

Our first online congress! Nia unua reta kongreso!
Following the cancellation of our congress in Inverness this year, the association has decided to hold an online congress instead!
We’ll meet between 2pm and 5pm on Saturday 30th May 2020, and warmly welcome any Esperantists – learners or fluent speakers – from anywhere in the world.
It’ll be a chance for us to chat together, hold our Annual General Meeting, and also hear from two special guest speakers we are really honoured to have.
Manuela Burghelea, from the Esperanto research team at the University of St Andrews, and Race MoChridhe, who is working on a book on the Scottish Esperanto movement, will speak to us about their research into the culture and community of Esperanto.

Lecture on the Scottish movement | Prelego pri la skota movado
Many thanks to all who joined our event on Zoom from across the world earlier this week, where Hugh Reid, one of our committee and the editor of our magazine Esperanto en Skotlando, gave a fascinating talk on the Scottish Esperanto movement throughout its long history.
Hugh’s talk touched on so many important facets of our movement – our events and clubs, the personal experiences, the international exchanges, Scotland’s hosting of one world congress, and the huge contribution of Scottish Esperantists to the language’s literary tradition.

Many thanks to Guilherme Fians of the University of Manchester for a thought-provoking and enlightening lecture yesterday, on topic of the politics of Esperanto in France.
A crowd of more than twenty joined by Zoom from across Scotland and the world, to hear about the different political aspects of Esperanto as a movement – through its foundation, history and modern day, from the French movement to international Esperanto groups such as UEA (Universala Esperanto-Asocio) and SAT (Sennacieca Asocio Tutmonda – the World Anational [or non-national] Association).

It was fascinating to hear about Guilherme’s research into our movement. He has a forthcoming book on the topic, the working title of which is Of Polyglots, Revolutionaries and Geeks: Language Politics and the Making of the Esperanto Community, which we’ll be sure to mention once it comes out. New deadline for book about Esperanto and Scotland | Nova limdato por libro pri Esperanto kaj Skotlando
Earlier this year we shared the exciting news of a forthcoming book on the links between Esperanto and Scotland’s identity. We shared the editor’s call for submissions to this book, and the deadline was to be March.
Given the current pandemic, the deadline for abstracts is now 15th June of this year, and the deadline for full chapter submissions has been moved from 15th September to 31st December.
This will hopefully give plenty more time for people to write something!
There is full information on the publisher’s website, while the editor, Race, explains more about the proposed book in our next edition of Esperanto en Skotlando – and that’s coming out very soon.

Further to the two events we previously announced, we’re delighted to add another online event organised by our St Andrews group.
On Tuesday 21st April at 3pm, University of Manchester anthropologist Guilherme Fians will present on Zoom on his area of research into Esperanto, with the following theme:
“We have never been universal: Speaking Esperanto as a political practice in France.”

Both events should last about an hour and a half, including time for questions and discussion. They will both be in English, so will be ideal opportunities for non-Esperantists to find out more about different facets of our unique global movement.

It was great to get a bunch of speakers from across Scotland – and beyond – together for an online chat this week.
In the face of the global shutdown, it’s nice to know that Esperanto can still bring people together!
We are planning more chats and lectures in the coming weeks. We aim to have another informal chat on the evening of Tuesday 14th April, and then on Tuesday 5th May our St Andrews group has organised a talk (in English) about the Esperanto movement in Scotland.
More details about both these events, and how to join them online, will be posted soon.

Following the recent cancellation of all our in-person meetings, our Edinburgh speakers are excited to host the first of hopefully many online chats for Esperantists in Scotland.
To join the chat, visit this link on our MeetUp page. On the day of the meeting there’ll then be a link to a meeting on video-conferencing website Zoom. From there you can either join through the Zoom app (which you’ll need to download) or you can just join through your browser. Make sure you have a functioning microphone and speakers!
It will take place on Tuesday evening of this week – the 24th of March – between 7.00pm and 9.00pm. It will be a very informal conversation session, so bring a drink and enjoy a chance to practice your Esperanto from the comfort of your own home.
If you’re a beginner or learner, don’t worry – you’re very welcome too! Feel free to ask questions in English if you’re unsure about anything, as there will be experienced speakers there who can help.

Post la lastatempa nuligo de ĉiuj el niaj personaj renkontiĝoj, niaj edinburgaj parolantoj ekscitiĝas gastigi la unua el espereble multaj retaj babiloj por esperantistoj en Skotlando.
Por aliĝi al la babilo, vizitu ĉi tiun ligon en nia MeetUp-paĝo. La tagon de la renktontiĝo estos ligo al renkontiĝejo en video-konferenca retejo Zoom. De tie vi povos aŭ aliĝi per la Zoom apo (kiun vi bezonos elŝuti) aŭ vi povos simple aliĝi per via retumilo. Certigu ke vi havas funkcian mikrofonon kaj aŭskultilon!
Ĝi okazos lundon vespere ĉi tiun semajnon – la 24an de marto – inter la 7a ptm kaj la 9a ptm. Ĝi estos tre neformala konversacia sesio, do alportu trinkon kaj ĝuu ŝancon por praktiki vian Esperanton en la komforto de via hejmo.
Se vi estas komencanto aŭ lernanto, ne zorgu – vi tre bonvenos ankaŭ! Estu libera fari demandojn en la angla se vi malcertas pri io, ĉar estos spertaj parolantoj tie kiu povas helpi.

Coronavirus | Kronviruso
As you will be aware, extreme measures are being recommended across Scotland and beyond in the light of the Coronavirus pandemic.
To play our part in this, we are sadly cancelling all our forthcoming events – both our local events around the country and our annual congress in Inverness in May. No new events will be arranged for the foreseeable future until circumstances change.
This is a difficult decision, but we want to do everything we can to discourage non-essential travel and gatherings.
We are contacting all those who have registered to our congress to arrange refunds. Our Annual General Meeting is likely to take place virtually, and we will communicate details of this soon on this website and through our social channels.
If any periods of isolation give you more time to study Esperanto there are many ways of doing this.
We are looking into some virtual gatherings for practice and chat, and we will publicise these when they are arranged.
We wish everyone safety and health in the coming weeks.

Por fari nian rolon en ĉi tio, ni malfeliĉe nuligas ĉiujn el niaj venontaj eventoj – kaj niajn lokajn eventojn ĉirkaŭ la lando kaj nian jarkongreson en Inverness en majo. Neniuj novaj eventoj aranĝiĝos dum la videbla estonteco ĝis cikonstancaro ŝanĝiĝos.
Ĉi tio estas malfacila decido, sed ni volas fari ĉion, kion ni povas por malkuraĝi nenecesajn vojaĝadon kaj renkontiĝojn.
Ni kontaktas ĉiujn kongres-aliĝintojn por aranĝi repagon. Nia jarkunveno eble okazos virtuale, kaj ni komunikos detalojn pri ĉi tio baldaŭ en ĉi tiu retejo kaj per niaj sociaj kanaloj.
Se iaj ajn periodoj de izoliĝo donos al vi pli da tempo por studi Esperanton estas multaj metodoj por fari ĉi tion.
Ni pripensas kelkajn virtualajn renkontiĝojn por praktikado kaj babilado, kaj ni publikigos ĉi tiujn kiam ili estos aranĝitaj.
Ni deziras al ĉiu sekurecon kaj sanon dum la venontaj semajnoj.
